Six years later and the move to hosted WordPress

Maybe you noticed on danieljohnsonjr.com that I'm moving to WordPress. If not, here's a heads-up.

I've played around with free hosting since I first set up my GeoCities site back in 2002. I still have "Dan's Links" set up as my home page on my browser. (Stop laughing. It's worked for me. ;P)

I've got me some web hosting and am slowly working my way in moving my blogs to hosted WordPress. I'm having to learn about nameservers and public_html, Fantastico, and all that fun stuff. But I'm really looking forward to playing with PHP and MySQL, since I've done a lot of SQL Server development for work.

If things here appear a bit wonky for awhile, that's why. Also, if you'd like to offer some free advice during the transition, feel free to leave it in the comments, or contact me through the usual channels.

VSP: 08-08-08

Okay, time for another Very Special Post. This post was, um, posted at 08:08 on 08/08/08. Because I can.

Interestingly, several neat events are happening today as well. I may update this post to include what I've been able to find, but feel free to document any you've found in the comments.

Make it a great day!

Happy Anniversary to Us!

Thirteen years ago Jennie and I embarked on this wonderful adventure that is marriage. In some ways it feels like only yesterday; in others, it feels like quite a while. I love how time is elastic like that.

I haven't typically been one to give greeting cards, so I hope that she'll be impressed when she gets the one I'm giving her, even if it came from a card store. It reads:

Baby, when I think about us,
I can't help but love
what we've become.
Yes, those early days
of you and me were amazing.
But now, we've eased
into this deep, soulful groove...
the kind that fills in
all the missing beats
of a man's life
with what's real and true...

You're the rhythm to my rhyme --
smooth and steady
as a heartbeat.
You complete me, Baby.
And while I've loved
every stage of us,
I wouldn't give anything for this one --
the one where we
know each other by heart.

You're the woman who grooves me.
Always have. And, Baby...
you always will.

Happy Anniversary

I noticed that Ed from Ed's Mixed Bag played my request for Ingrid Michaelson's "The Way I Am" on his latest show. Thanks, Ed!

If you meet a lot of people, what do you do to help you remember their names, etc.? I recalled a book by Harry Lorayne. He was able to recall people he'd just met in a crowd. I would like to be more like that: http://snurl.com/278ji

Dave Ramsey and The Total Money Makeover

I've been listening to the Dave Ramsey Show via podcast on my commute up to Dayton every day. Our family is going to buy his book The Total Money Makeover: A Proven Plan for Financial Fitness. We think this is a good deal. Not sure if we want to wait for it to be delivered or simply go buy it now at the brick and mortar store.

New Media Cincinnati - Multiple Identities

We had a lively, 30-minute discussion about managing versus merging multiple online identities. Could have easily gone on for an hour. Managing a single online presence is hard enough with all the various social media tools available. Add in more online presences and blogs, and it's easy to see the problem.

Listen to the New Media Cincinnati(http://newmediacincinnati.com/) community discuss this. Feel free to continue the conversation.

Memorial to Robin Broxterman and Brian Schira

Talk about the loss of two Colerain Township firefighters, Robin Broxterman and Brian Schira, on April 4, 2008

Community response has been phenomenal and overwhelming

7,000-8,000 firefighters from around the country expected to show up during the funeral procession: http://news.enquirer.com/…ll/article

Recall my Dad being with the Colerain Township Fire Department when it was formed in 1975.

He was with the department when the only other death happened back in 1977, 31 years ago.

Found a version of "Amazing Grace" on bagpipes, recorded at the Cincinnati Museum Center in March 2007

Thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends of Robin Broxterman and Brian Schira. We know your pain is real.

Today is not really my birthday... or is it?

I've already received a few wishes of Happy Birthday today. But my birthday isn't really today... or is it?

It's not my intent to deceive my friends, but rather to deceive those that aggregate my information. You see, there are several ways to compromise your privacy online, and one of them is by revealing your birthday. Combine that with a social security number and an address, and, as Chris Penn says, you have the unholy trinity of identity fraud.

So thanks for the birthday wishes. I should point out that my daughter has been in a month-long campaign of wishing me happy birthday. So feel free. I definitely appreciate it.

Fatblogging

Weight: 221.6
Pants size: 40

You may be aware that since the second week of January, all three of us have been attending Weight Watchers meetings. I started out at 231 lbs and size 42 waist.

I'm thinking of blogging my continued efforts. I'd have to say that, in addition to the normal things like tracking what I'm eating better and exercising more, attending regular meetings and having our entire family involved has been really helpful.

There's a whole fatblogging movement going on already here, so I think blogging about my efforts here will help.

Feel free to join the conversation!

Shaping up to be a busy weekend

The weekend is here and it's setting up to be a busy one:

  • Jennie works tonight.
  • Saturday morning we have our weekly Weight Watchers meeting.
  • After that meeting we're going to call the pediatrician to see if she'll see Keisha about her earache, the same one that's been keeping her from wearing her hearing aids.
  • Saturday afternoon I'm going to the New Media Cincinnati meetup.
  • Sunday morning I'm singing in the choir at church, an a cappella song called "How Excellent". It's gonna be awesome.
  • I'll also be helping run the sound during the service. Come join us if you'd like.
  • Sunday afternoon I have a 20-year reunion planning meeting with other classmates.
  • Sunday evening I'll be on The Pod 5 Live, and I hope you'll join the party there as well.
Somewhere between we'll be resting and eating and grocery shopping and somehow spending time together as a family. I guess I'll be looking forward to getting back to work on Monday so that I can get some rest, ;-) .

Twitter makes sharing the subtle nuances of life with friends and family easy

I used to put a small byline by each blog post here at the Journey Inside My Mind Blog:

Mood: Happy
Listening to: Coverville
Reading: Join the Conversation by Joseph Jaffe
Eating: baby carrots
Watching: Twitter in Plain English
These short, bite-sized nuggets (such as what you just saw above)would let you know how and what I was doing. Since August 2006, however, I've opted for a different way: Twitter

You may already know about Twitter, but the folks from Common Craft have put together a video that really helps it make sense:
