Dave Ramsey and The Total Money Makeover

I've been listening to the Dave Ramsey Show via podcast on my commute up to Dayton every day. Our family is going to buy his book The Total Money Makeover: A Proven Plan for Financial Fitness. We think this is a good deal. Not sure if we want to wait for it to be delivered or simply go buy it now at the brick and mortar store.

Need help with smart playlists in iTunes

I'm looking for help setting up smart playlists in iTunes for music podcasts and other podcasts, respectively. I'd like to get away from having a single smart playlist for everything, but I don't want to have to click on individual items in a podcast to play them on the iPod either.

danieljohnsonjr's Master Podcast Subscription Mashup

Okay, so I subscribe to a lot of podcasts. I think I have over 75 feeds in my collection at PodShow. Thankfully, I don't have to manage all of those individual subscriptions on my computer as the shows download. I used to at first, but when PodShow introduced Channels, I jumped on board. I started using GigaDial and Odeo to get individual items into a feed, shows that I not necessarily wanted to subscribe to, but just wanted to check out and/or make available to others.

PodShow+ does a pretty good job of helping manage the content delivery. I subscribe to my channel RSS feeds using Juice, and I'm glad that I only have a few subscriptions for each of my channels, versus the total number of subscriptions I have.

I also like being able to check out shownotes pages for the shows I subscribe to, and, until recently, I would subscribe to each individual feed in Google Reader. I found myself going through each individual show again, which became a bit cumbersome.

So after playing around with Yahoo! Pipes, which I first heard about some months ago from Christopher Penn, I am happy to say that I've created a configurable pipe, entitled "danieljohnsonjr's Master Podcast Subscription Mashup". It defaults to show 50 items, but you can increase or decrease that number as you wish. The pipe generates an RSS feed that I have subscribed to in Google Reader. I could similarly subscribe to this feed in Juice and further reduce the number of feeds I have there. I haven't decided yet. I can also listen to podcasts via Google Reader.

What I like about pipes is the ability to mashup content like this from various sources into one source, which is easier to manage.

So, if you wanna see my entire collection in a single feed, create one of your own from my subscriptions, or create your own to share, here you go:

Pipes >> danieljohnsonjr's Master Podcast Subscription Mashup: (link), (iTunes), (RSS)
As I play around with this tool, I can't help but consider its possibilities to aggregate information related to something for my job. Still letting that potential marinate. What interesting ways have you found to use Yahoo! Pipes?

The new media playground is like jazz

Mood: upbeat
Listening to: Managing the Gray: Every Day is a Good Day
Reading: Learning XML, Second Edition
Eating: an apple

I checked my Bloglines and noticed that C.C. Chapman mentioned my name on his latest episode and the Journey Inside My Mind Blog in the shownotes, specifically with an audio comment about how the new media playground is a lot like jazz:

"Do not fear mistakes; there are none." - Miles Davis.
A lot of jazz music usually involves improvisation within the boundaries of a chord progression. The song starts off, usually with the melody. Then different instruments take their solos, which usually fall within the same chord progression as the melody. Eventually everyone comes back together to wrap up the song.

I'm probably grossly oversimplifying things with that description, especially when you consider trendsetters like Miles Davis, who through constantly reinventing himself, created new boundaries and genres of jazz music (Check out this post from 2003 for more information: Paving the Milestones).

I like to think that's what it's like with what we're doing with new media.

ABOUT DANIEL JOHNSON, JR.

I suppose I should share a bit more about me, in case this is your first time here.

Where Do You Get Your Ideas?

Time for a true "journey inside my mind"...

Since the beginning of this year I have been bouncing back and forth from Cincinnati - where I live - to Dayton, where I work. That long commute has made me a "captive audience" for a lot of portable, on-demand programming (affectionately known as "podcasts"). I usually listen to music podcasts at work so that I can concentrate on my programming duties, and I like to listen to talk-type programming during the commute.

There are some programs I listen to only because I like to hear the passion in the podcasters' voices. I could care less about the content, and in many ways, I really don't like it at all. What I DO like, however, is the passion and excitement they convey, whether it's from ranting about something that bugs them, or extolling the praises of something they love.

I noticed again on the commute up to work that I'd gotten distracted from the program I was listening and was thinking of my own ideas for things. It's not that the content was boring me; au contraire mon frere! As often is the case, I heard something on one of these programs and it sparked some creativity.

My iRiver has a recorder on it, and I've often recorded my thoughts to capture them for later.

Where are you the most creative?

Saturday Spring Cleaning and Golf

Saturday was an all-around great day for us. A single mother from church had some serious spring cleaning work that needed to be done, and several of us went to her house and helped her out.

At about 2:15 pm, we left her house and drove to Meadowlinks Golf Course, which is part of Winton Woods here in Cincinnati. We signed Keisha up for some Junior Golf lessons a few weeks ago, and Jennie and I have been taking lessons concurrently.
Last week we practiced pitching and chipping; this week we learned full swings. Next week, we'll learn putting. After next week's lesson, Jennie, Keisha, and I will have a golf scramble on the beginner's course together.

I can easily see why golfing can become an obsession because it looks a lot easier than it is. I have found myself watching golf on TV - something I NEVER was interested in doing when I was younger. I think it could become a healthy obsession that our entire family could enjoy. Yeah, of course it could. If Keisha shows some serious interest and can develop some good skill, she could get a scholarship to go to college.

It's probably just serendipity that one of my all-time favorite family podcasts, "Dancing With Elephants", just did an episode about golfing. They mentioned a couple of books to check out, related to teaching kids golf:

Refocus and Hiatus

Refocus is a natural part of life.

If you have listened to the most recent episode of the Journey Inside My Mind Podcast, you'll know that I have put it on hiatus until the end of this month. I have spent the month thus far listening to lots of other podcasts and thinking about the direction I want the show to take. Here are the options as I see them:

  1. Keep on doing the show as I already have
  2. Change the format, and
  3. End the show completely and start a new one

I'm like a pressure cooker now, though, getting eager to record something. So stay subscribed or get subscribed, and you'll be able to hear what I have got to say.

One Big JIMM Podcast Feed

This is either going to work smoothly or really get messed up. I have created a master feed of all the Journey Inside My Mind Podcast episodes and have just redirected the FeedBurner URL to pull from that feed. No need to update your subscriptions, but you may find a bunch of new episodes in your podcatching software. I hope not, though.

I described the rationale behind this in the earlier article, "Working on new, custom RSS feed for JIMM Podcast". One big reason is so that the show can get listed in the various popular podcast directories, including the iTunes Music Store. I guess I thought that it would automatically get discovered by iTunes, but I've now learned that wasn't the case. I have since submitted the feed to be listed, and I'm looking forward to being able to share the news that the show is listed in that directory.

Working on new, custom RSS feed for JIMM Podcast

I could seriously go back to bed right now. I got pleasantly distracted yesterday with the idea of creating my own RSS feed for the Journey Inside My Mind Podcast.

Right now, FeedBurner is creating the feed from whatever Blogger puts on the front page. I had initially set up the blog to show 999 posts per page, so that everything would be on the front page and therefore also in the feed. After about 50 episodes or so, it was taking too long for the page to load, so I opted to limit the number to the last 50 episodes per page.

I recently was reminded that Rob at podcast411 has a tutorial on how to create an RSS feed by hand. That got me thinking that I could have, at a minimum, feeds with 50 episodes in them at a time. That way, new listeners could subscribe to it and then easily be able to pick up some of the older episodes, some of which are my personal favorites.

I think I will opt instead to use this feed for everything. It is a small task to maintain this with every episode that gets released, and it will always redirect subscribers back to the main page.

So I spent over 6 hours yesterday getting the first 55 episodes into the new feed. I'm currently up to 79 episodes, so it's just a bit more work to get them into the master feed.

Then I get to work with the FeedBurner folks to redirect the podcast feed from the original Atom feed on the blog to this new feed. I've heard about it done from other podcasters, and it appears to be seamless.

I may opt to record the episode for this coming week today or continue assembling the rest of the episodes into the new RSS feed.

Snowstorms, long drives, and podcasts - hooray!

I just spent 3-1/2 hours driving 60 miles from north of Dayton, Ohio to my home in Cincinnati. That averages to just over 17 miles per hour. On the highway. In a snowstorm. Right now we have about 6 inches on the ground.

Fortunately, I had some great podcasts to listen to along the way! Such as

I also opted to call the following podcaster's comment lines and leave messages:
Driving distance: 60 miles
Driving time: 3-1/2 hours
Having you podcasters to keep me company during a snowstorm: Priceless

Thank you all for keeping me company. I didn't need a radio.
