A little while ago - maybe a month or so, I wrote a letter to my congressman, Steve Chabot. Below is a copy of the reply I received:
June 30, 2006
Dear Mr. Johnson:
Thank you for contacting me to express your support for net neutrality. It was good to hear from you and I appreciate having the benefit of your views on this important issue.
I agree that we must continue to ensure that consumers have access to the internet and that we pursue policies that encourage continued internet growth and innovation. To that end, the House passed the Communications, Opportunity, Promotion, and Enhancement Act (COPE Act) on June 8, 2006 by a bipartisan vote of 321-101. This bill, H.R. 5252, included the four principles that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) developed to maintain net neutrality.Specifically, the net neutrality provisions that this bill would make law state:- Consumers are entitled to access the lawful internet content of their choice.
- Consumers are entitled to run applications and use services of their choice, subject to the needs of law enforcement.
- Consumers are entitled to connect their choice of legal devices that do not harm the network.
- Consumers are entitled to competition among network providers, application and service providers, and content providers.
It is important that the internet -- with its growth and innovation -- remain affordable and available rather than bogged down by burdensome federal regulations that slow broadband deployment and reduce competition.
The Senate is expected to take up its version of telecommunications reform later this year. I will certainly keep your views in mind as efforts to update our nation's telecom laws move forward. Thanks again for contacting me.
Sincerely,
Steve Chabot
