JIMM 60 - Double Shots II

Mood: alert and fully caffeinated
Listening to: JIMM 60 - Double Shots II
Eating: 3 Krispy Kreme donuts, the ones with the custard inside and chocolate on the outside, Mmmmm!

I've already listened to this episode a few times. I really like the music and the new "sounders". I think my audio used to fill in the gaps might be a little down.

Feel free to record an audio comment at the podcast page using the MyChingo system.

TV Volume Poltergeist

Mood: happy and tired
Listening to: Keisha getting ready for bed
Eating: leftover LaRosa's pizza
Watching: 1st half of Glory Road

We were puzzled earlier tonight. It seemed that, for no reason whatsoever, all of a sudden the volume on our TV would get increased to the maximum. The Mute button on the remote control wouldn't work, and when we tried to turn the volume down with the remote control and by hand, it wouldn't stay down.

So we'd have to turn the TV off and turn it back on. That seemed to work. For a little while.

Jennie and I were trying to figure out what was going on. It seemed as though someone else had control of our TV. We speculated that it was because the TV was 10 years old.

And then I got up and walked around the coffee table:

Yesterday I disconnected our digital cable box and our cable modem. I put the remote control for the cable box with this stuff. It appears that the remote control can still control our TV, even though it's not connected with the digital cable box anymore. I saw that the cable modem was sitting on the remote control, pressing the TV and Volume control.

Whew. And we were thinking that Otis, our house ghost, was back. What? I just heard a sound from somewhere in the apartment.

Hungry Lucy Releases "Before We Stand...We Crawl" under Creative Commons License

Mood:
Listening to:
Reading:
Eating:
Watching:

Hungry Lucy, the "Trip-Pop" duo, whose music has been featured on several podcasts, including "Dave's Lounge", "The Chillcast with Anji Bee", and "Journey Inside My Mind", along with Public Radio programs such as "Echoes" and "Audiosyncracies", has decided to try something different with their latest release, "Before We Stand... We Crawl".

From the Hungry Lucy website:

In a move that’s part social experiment, and part commentary on the bizarre tactics of the mainstream music industry, Hungry Lucy are releasing “Before We Stand ... We Crawl” under Creative Commons license. In a nutshell, this license allows listeners to share these songs with friends and know that the band is on their side. In fact, the staunchly independent Hungry Lucy is encouraging their fans to make copies of the EP and spread it around.
I've already heard some of this music on podcasts, and I look forward to playing it very soon on the Journey Inside My Mind. Hungry Lucy: intoxicating trip-pop music with enchanting female vocals. Nice.

Welcome Bene Diction Blogs On Readers!

Mood: elated and slightly tired
Listening to: a program on PBS about Lucille Ball
Reading: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Book 5), with Keisha - just finished ch. 3

Bene Diction, the Official Canuck of Journey Inside My Mind, writes (my links):

Journey Inside My Mind has found his niche. Dan - you are a natural at podcasting. And thanks for introducing us to Ganns Dean (Superblessed) music, which I think is very cool.
Ganns is the Official Superblessed Blogger of Journey Inside My Mind, you may recall.

I'll be doing the 60th episode this coming weekend, and I realized a short while ago that I've almost been doing this for an entire year. Please check out the show, and leave feedback - good, bad, and ugly.

Update: It looks like Ganns is up at the Podsafe Music Network as of today. I think that's supercool because he's got the potential to get played by podcasters from all over the world now, not just my little show! ;)

Journey Inside My Mind on PodShow+

Mood: sleepy
Listening to: JIMM 58 - Happy Birthday Keisha!
Eating: fish and salad
Watching: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Book 4)

It looks like PodShow+ has recognized my podcast, probably since it's registered with the Podsafe Music Network. I haven't opted to migrate everything to the PodShow Delivery Network - still counting the cost on that.

Update: after looking at what else is in my collection now, I think my show arrived there because the OPML import finally worked.

Debt Collectors forcing people into bancruptcy

Mood: pleasant
Listening to: Accident Hash #162
Eating: apple and a pop tart - at least one of them is healthy

Clark Howard reports:

Collectors scaring people into bankruptcy

If you owe a debt to a credit card company and that company uses an in-house collector, that bank can use any tactic to come after you. Aside from harming you physically or threatening to put you in jail, in –house bank collectors can do just about anything to get the money you owe. It’s a special exemption under the rules of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. But most debts are turned over to third party companies who use these threatening tactics even though it’s illegal for them to do so. As a result, people are getting scared into filing bankruptcy. Clark saw a sign the other day, saying “Bankruptcy Is Still An Option.” That’s a step most people don’t need to take, but these creditors convince people there is no other way. It’s best to honor your debts and pay them a soon as you are on your feet. But according to the FDCPA, collectors must follow these rules:
  1. A collector cannot call you after you’ve told them not to do so.
  2. A collector cannot call you at work.
  3. A collector cannot tell other people about your debt.
  4. A collector cannot threaten you (with court, jail or other).
And lastly, please don’t ever give a collector your bank account information or give them post-dated checks. You want a written agreement about how the debt will be paid before you pay a cent.

JIMM 58 - Happy Birthday, Keisha!

I teased you about it a few days ago (see "What Keisha and I Did"). The show is now available.

Something seems to be amok with the Feedburner feed; enclosures aren't downloading automatically through my Juice receiver*. iTunes is handling it okay, from what I heard.

By the way, be sure to dig me at PodShow+!

*I have the mp3 file hosted by Odeo, the feed through Feedburner, and the blog through Google/Blogger. In the past this hasn't been a problem.

Two Big Things Happened Today

Mood: almost ready for bed
Listening to: "When I Call On Jesus" - Nicole C. Mullen

As the post title, indicates, today was a big day for us:

Thing 1 - Keisha's Birthday Party

We had a birthday party for Keisha at Big Top Bear, the same place where she got a newborn bear (refer to that particular episode of JIMM podcast). There were some kids from 4 different areas of her life:

  1. church
  2. school
  3. ASL class/Camp ASL
  4. neighbors
It was pretty cool to see all these kids spend time together. I took lots of pictures which might end up at the Flickr page soon.

Each girl got a bear. Keisha got lots of gifts. Big Top Bear is probably one of the best places to have a birthday party, in my opinion - they did it up for the kids.

Thing 2 - Campus Ministry Reunion

Jennie and I wound up meeting each other in the campus ministry through our church back in the early '90s. Tonight there was a reunion, in which lots of people- close to 75 in fact - came in from all over - many from such distant places as Florida, Massachusetts, and Missouri.

Jennie got up and shared about her gratitude to the woman who invited her to study the Bible. She spoke very eloquently for being so nervous.

Lots of pictures and photo albums passed around. Some videos made from back then of me and some others lip synching to songs. Stuff worthy of YouTube and Google Video.

Some pictures taken. E-mail addresses left. Business cards exchanged. Sharing old memories. Sharing recent stories. Pictures of each others' kids. Receding hairlines and bulging waistlines.

There were even baskets filled with typical campus stuff: deck of cards, pocket notebook, highlighter, Ramen noodles, box of macaroni and cheese, frisbee.

Good times.

Some Local Weathermen Look the Same

Mood: keepin cool in the AC
Listening to: sound of our fan, rain outside
Eating: Hmmm, I'm stil hungry
Watching: local weather reports

Jennie and I have noticed that some of the weathermen look the same. Last night I was watching the report for one channel, and I had to do a double-take because I thought it was the guy from a different channel. From the side, some of the meteorologists all have the same complexion and receding hairline. Just an observation.

It's almost like they could sub for each other if needed.

What Keisha and I Did

Mood: great
Listening to: Dave's Lounge 51

Congressman Steve Chabot on Net Neutrality

A little while ago - maybe a month or so, I wrote a letter to my congressman, Steve Chabot. Below is a copy of the reply I received:

June 30, 2006

Dear Mr. Johnson:

Thank you for contacting me to express your support for net neutrality. It was good to hear from you and I appreciate having the benefit of your views on this important issue.

I agree that we must continue to ensure that consumers have access to the internet and that we pursue policies that encourage continued internet growth and innovation. To that end, the House passed the Communications, Opportunity, Promotion, and Enhancement Act (COPE Act) on June 8, 2006 by a bipartisan vote of 321-101. This bill, H.R. 5252, included the four principles that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) developed to maintain net neutrality.

Specifically, the net neutrality provisions that this bill would make law state:
  • Consumers are entitled to access the lawful internet content of their choice.
  • Consumers are entitled to run applications and use services of their choice, subject to the needs of law enforcement.
  • Consumers are entitled to connect their choice of legal devices that do not harm the network.
  • Consumers are entitled to competition among network providers, application and service providers, and content providers.
It is important that the internet -- with its growth and innovation -- remain affordable and available rather than bogged down by burdensome federal regulations that slow broadband deployment and reduce competition.

The Senate is expected to take up its version of telecommunications reform later this year. I will certainly keep your views in mind as efforts to update our nation's telecom laws move forward. Thanks again for contacting me.

Sincerely,

Steve Chabot

SC/ms

Feel free to visit my official Internet site at www.house.gov/chabot where you can obtain additional information about issues before Congress, constituent services provided by my office, and Washington, DC tours. I hope that you will find this site to be a useful and informative resource.

JIMM 56 - By the Poolside

Mood: relaxed
Listening to: JIMM 56 - By the Poolside
Eating: salad

Earlier today I recorded the show while at the swimming pool. It's got some great alternative music in there, along with a fun song about eating, for the kids.

Gonna go see what's in the fridge before I consider heading to bed.

By the way, I just counted - with this episode I have played over 260 songs since I first started this thing back at the end of August 2005. That's a lot of music!

If you listen to the show, why not let me know who you are and where you're listening from? Send me an e-mail to danimal0416 at gmail, or send me an audio comment. Thanks!
