On Sunday, September 25, 2005, members of the Cincinnati church of Christ, as well as others in the community, participated in the One Voice Cheryl Dawson Memorial Walk-a-thon to help victims of domestic abuse and raise awareness of domestic violence:
Cheryl Dawson was stabbed to death outside her workplace in March of 2002 by her estranged husband. She was a member of the Cincinnati church of Christ. (related post: "One More Angel in Heaven")
October is Domestic Violence Awareness month, so this event was aptly timed.
I recorded audio from this event, and the upcoming podcast, as well as this montage, contains excerpts from that audio.
You'll hear audio from the outdoor worship service and comments from church members and others about Cheryl and the event.
Background music comes from the Podsafe Music Network , mostly from Rob Costlow, but there is one of my favorite songs by Adrina Thorpe called "Did You Think" (lyrics page), which is perfect for this type of podcast.

Next Podcast Follow-up - Keisha and Walkathon
I mentioned two days ago my thoughts for the next podcast. I'm writing this post to provide an update:
Something for the Kids
Keisha and I decided that we'll do a show together this coming Wednesday or Thursday, when I've been working from home. She wasn't that into it yesterday. It will be a podcast "for the kids", and you'll definitely hear it in the music. Not only so, but you'll get some great commentary and perspective from an 8-year old girl.
Cheryl Dawson Memorial Walk-a-thon
For those that do not know what I'm referring to, here's a link to the post I made back in March 2002, after I'd found out she'd been murdered by her husband: "One More Angel in Heaven".
I collected A LOT of audio footage today. Close to three hours' worth. Most of the time, I had just set the mic to record, so I know I won't be using the entire footage. It does appear that I'll want to break it up into multiple episodes, though.
I got footage from the drive to Sawyer Point, with Keisha and me - maybe I could use some of that for the above podcast.
I got footage from our church service, including some fantastic singing and a message from our minister. Maybe I'll intermingle the songs throughout the podcast, as I would songs I would usually play from other artists. From talking with the sound crew, they didn't record the message. I guess that means that I have the only recorded version of today's sermon. I'll look into pulling that out and send it to the website team; perhaps they'll post it to the website.
Prior to the walk, I was able to interview some church members and family about their memories of Cheryl. Understandably, those that were most closest to her had difficultly. In fact, there were a couple of women who were closest to her that didn't want to be interviewed, just because it was such an emotional time.
I was able to talk with the woman who had organized the event as a way of her dealing with her own grief: not only is she a survivor of domestic abuse herself, but she was present at the time that Cheryl was murdered: she heard it as an audio witness.
So, right now I'm going through the audio, annotating it; i.e., identifying what's being talked about at different spots. Then I'll go back and pull the portions I'll want to use for upcoming podcast episodes.
I also hope to find some related websites, not only for the Cincinnati area, but also some others. Thoughts on the Podcasting Journey Thus Far
On my way up to work this morning, I listened to JIMM 14 - Let's Rock! once again. I think that show is probably one of the best produced ones I've done thus far. Don't get me wrong - I like the others, but I like how this one was done.
Some observations for myself:

- Keeping it down to less than 30 minutes lets me included another podcast on my media player (limited to 60 MB). It's not that I don't mind hearing my own voice so much - maybe it is - as much as it is that I want to hear other podcasts, too.
- I need to use the envelope control in Audacity to "turn down" the background music while I'm talking. It sounded like I was trying to compete with the opening music. There were certain times when it felt distracting to me as a listener. I think the envelope control is the one that lets you set control points to adjust the amplitude over a certain time frame.
- Show preparation is key. I sounded so much together because I'd already laid out what I was going to say. Having said that, I would like to get to a point where it does sound more impromptu rather than just read from a screen. The more comfortable I am with the material, the more easily it will flow throughout the show.
- I really like using "sweepers"; i.e., shout-outs, show identifiers, PSAs, and so forth.
- I love being able to feature my family on the shows.
- I like that this show, and the one prior to that one - "Jazzmania" - were centered around a particular genre of music. I may like to continue that trend with other genres, or I may like to mix it up a bit.
- When using Audacity, save early and save often!
- It's going to take longer to put together a show than I initially thought. Getting the songs together is the easy part. Recording is relatively easy, as long as I know what I'm going to say. Mixing, editing, writing show notes, and publishing is what takes the most time.
- I'm probably going to have to set up a schedule to only do one show a week until I've been able to achieve better balance between podcasting and the other aspects of my life. My tendency has been to be hyperfocused on that which interests me the most, neglecting everything else, which isn't right.
- I love getting feedback, but that cannot be the reason why I do this show.
- Now that I'm using this blog for the podcast, do I still want to blog as usual with the same gut-level openness and honesty I've done in the past? I'm a bit hesitant because I don't want to necessarily drive listeners away. It probably shouldn't matter.

My Dreams Are Weirder Than Yours
Keisha's not feeling well today. Actually she's not been feeling well for the past couple of days. We think it may be cold or allergies or something like that. Congestion, coughing, lethargy.
I've already contacted the school to inform them, and we'll pick up homework later. I've also obtained a list of pediatricians in the area so we can schedule an appointment.
But that's not the main reason for this post:
I had a bad dream last night. We'd found out that Keisha had terrible schizophrenia. It was going to be difficult to treat, and I felt helpless and scared. The medications available are for adults, if my memory serves me right.
It was just weird, and I'm glad Jennie called me to wake me up out of it.

- I think it's better to save the mp3 files to your computer instead of listening to them online. That way you can listen to them at your leisure over and over again if you wish. In many browsers this is relatively intuitive if you right-click your mouse over the link to the mp3 file and select something like Save As.. or Save to disk... something like that.
- An even more efficient way is to use podcast receiving software, such as iPodder, which is what I use. Head on over to iPodder.org to learn how to use "podcatching" software.
- Download the setup file and launch it to install it on your system
- Go to the Subscriptions tab within iPodder
- Go to my blog (i.e., where you are right now)
- Find the section that says "Other Basic Stuff"
- Find the "chicklet" that says "XML"
- Right-click the chicklet and select copy link location or copy shortcut Go back to iPodder and click the green button with the "+" sign
- Paste the feed link into the dialog box and click the Save button
- The top pane of the Subscription window shows the names of podcasts you're subscribed to; the bottom pane shows individual episodes within selected podcast feeds.
Update: This article I found at Podcasting News provides step-by-step instructions on downloading and using iPodder - even with screen shots. Way better than I can do.

I just finished submitting this podcast to PodcastAlley.com -- The place to find podcasts. I'm only up to 11 episodes, but I figured it would be nice to start letting others know that there's something here. I haven't figured out just what that "something" is just yet. Maybe someone reading this has an idea:
So now I wait for my submission to be accepted. While I do that, I'm enjoying listening to the latest episode. I really like that music, and that's what I wanted to do when I was younger - be a DJ. So I think I'll try to find the right balance between hearing the sound of my voice and the voices of other, more talented individuals.
It's also great for listening during the work commute.
So, "keep sticking it in your ear" - the podcast, I mean. <*grin*>

Chinese Fortune Cookie Fortunes
Have you ever played the game where you add "in bed" to the end of a fortune you got from a fortune cookie? Apparently it's a pretty common pastime. Some of them turn out to be rather, um, interesting:

Jennie and I went to the local Chinese restaurant this afternoon and got fortune cookies which I fed to our dog Jake. I kept the fortunes so that I could add them to this blog:
I've come up with a couple that might be found in a fortune cookie, that also have a different meaning with "in bed" appended to it. Why not share some of your own?

Got this in the e-mail today:
A few days ago I was having some work done at the local Ford Dealership. A blonde came in and asked for a seven-hundred-ten.
We all looked at each other and another customer asked, "What is a seven-hundred-ten?"
She replied, "You know, the little piece in the middle of the engine, I have lost it and need a new one." She said that she did not know what it was but this piece had always been there.
He gave her a piece of paper and a pen and asked her to draw what the piece looked like. She drew a circle and in the middle of it wrote 710. He then took her over to another car, which had its hood up and asked, "Is there a 710 on this car?"
She pointed and said, "Of course, it's right there. (See below)

Speaking the Truth
Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.Which is better:

- Not speaking the truth at all?
In the past I've noticed that I've been one to stay quiet because it hasn't felt worth it to speak up. I've rationalized that I'm just being too sensitive/emotional/thin-skinned. Suck it up, I've told myself, and be a "man".
I've learned this past week that not being honest about my feelings is not being honest. As I write that previous sentence, it seems rather obvious. Yet I've been in this habit for so long of not being open and honest when my feelings have gotten hurt by someone else.
This realization shows me how subtle lying is. I'm reminded of 2 Corinthians 11:13-15, where the apostle Paul mentions that "Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light" and likewise where Jesus says in John 8:43-45:
Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me!I've developed a pattern of holding my hurt feelings inside, and it's done me more emotional harm than good. I've mentioned in earlier posts about my struggles with Compulsive Scab Picking (CSP), and I have come to realize that I engage in this behavior to compensate for not being open and honest about these emotions. I've tended to channel the inner hurt into external harm to myself.
While I've used much of this post to describe how harmful dishonesty is to oneself, I could probably use at least as much space to discuss how harmful dishonesty is to the person who has done the hurting.
If someone has hurt you, especially if by design it's "supposed to be" a close relationship (e.g., family or friend), then it does that person no good to not say anything. In fact, because you don't say anything, he or she will probably continue in the offensive behavior not only with you, but also with others.
Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.I want to develop the practice of "speaking the truth in love", but I'll start with just speaking the truth if that's what it takes.

Mary Landrieu, US Senator from Louisiana, recently said:Having toured Sri Lanka with Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist after the Indian Ocean tsunami in December, it saddens me to report that the devastation I've seen here at home is equal to that which I witnessed half a world away.I urge everyone listening to this podcast to please support the relief effort by making a monetary donation to the American Red Cross at redcross.org.
